MitoQ New Zealand Partners NUS Medicine to Advance Healthy Ageing and Mitochondrial Research

Singapore, 6 May 2026 - MitoQ New Zealand has entered into a research partnership with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, to support new scientific research into mitochondrial health, biological ageing and healthy longevity.

The partnership will examine MitoQ® (mitoquinol mesylate), a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant, within a broader research programme focused on healthy ageing. The collaboration will also explore how biological ageing clocks may help researchers better assess health and nutrition interventions over shorter timeframes than conventional long-term studies.

Mitochondria are often described as the energy centres of the cell. They play an important role in cellular energy production and are increasingly studied in relation to ageing biology, resilience and long-term health. Through this partnership, MitoQ New Zealand and NUS Medicine aim to contribute to a stronger scientific understanding of mitochondrial function and its relevance to healthy ageing.

The research collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding between Mr Mahara Inglis, Chief Executive Officer of MitoQ New Zealand, and Associate Professor Jan Gruber from the Department of Biochemistry and the Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme at NUS Medicine. The signing was commemorated at the Singapore-New Zealand Leadership Forum in Singapore on 4 May 2026.

The partnership was also acknowledged during the official visit of New Zealand Prime Minister Rt Hon Christopher Luxon to Singapore, alongside The Hon Nicola Willis, Minister of Finance, and The Hon Todd McClay, Minister for Trade and Investment. The collaboration sits within the broader Singapore-New Zealand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, where science, technology and innovation are key areas of cooperation.

Associate Professor Jan Gruber, who will lead the research, said:

“Our goal is to strengthen the evidence base on how widely used supplements work, so that individuals can make more informed, evidence-driven decisions about ageing well. This research aligns with Singapore’s long-term priorities in healthy ageing, disease prevention and productive longevity, contributes to Singapore-led research on biological ageing and supports longer-term international collaboration in healthy longevity science.”

A Research Partnership Focused on Biological Ageing

The research will apply biological ageing clocks alongside other health measures, including vascular and cognitive markers. Biological ageing clocks are tools used in research to help assess biological ageing patterns and related health indicators.

The programme will be conducted in two phases.

The first phase, expected to run from May to September 2026, will analyse samples from an existing three-month study involving 150 participants. Researchers will use blood samples and the LinAge3 biological ageing clock, an algorithm-based tool designed to assess biological ageing and support the prediction of longer-term health outcomes.

The second phase, beginning in July 2026, will involve a controlled trial with approximately 100 participants. This phase will combine questionnaire-based assessments with epigenetic clocks and the LinAge biological ageing clock. Researchers will also analyse multiple molecular layers from blood samples to validate the findings.

The research is expected to be completed in December 2027. Findings from the collaboration are expected to help guide future clinical research into biological ageing clocks and their potential use in assessing nutrition and supplementation strategies.
